Headache Q & A

What is a headache?

A headache refers to the pain you experience anywhere in your head. Headaches are a very common and frequent reason people use their sick time at work. While you may be able to manage your headache at home, if your head pain is frequent and affecting your quality of life, the team at Arlington Pain & Therapy can conduct an evaluation and provide a treatment plan to help you get relief.

What are the types of headaches?

There are many different types of headaches that cause different symptoms. Types of headaches include:

Tension headache

For most people, head pain is caused by a tension headache. These types of headaches flare up when you’re experiencing tightness in your neck, shoulders, scalp, or jaw muscles. Tension headaches tend to cause mild to moderate pain, but they can be a chronic problem.

Migraine

Migraine headaches cause more intense pain, usually localized to one side of the head. With a migraine headache, your pain may last anywhere from four hours to three days. These types of headaches may also cause other symptoms such as nausea or vomiting.

Cluster headache

Cluster headaches cause the most severe head pain but are the least common type of headache. With a cluster headache, you may feel an intense burning sensation in or around one of your eyes. These headaches usually occur in clusters, where you may experience the head pain up to three times a day for a few weeks, and then the pain goes away for a period of time.

Sinus headache

With a sinus headache, you feel pain in your forehead, under your eyes, and around your nose. You may be prone to sinus headaches if you suffer from allergies.

The team at Arlington Pain & Therapy can provide treatment for any type of headache, but specialize in managing tension headaches and migraines, which are also the most common.
